Ukrainian - Dutch youth collaboration
Staged from a text specially written by Ukrainian playwright Nina Zakhozenko, this production features Ukrainian and Dutch teenagers portraying youth at the beginning of the 2022 war in Bucha.
The four teenage characters embody stress responses: Fight, Flight, Freeze — a model reflecting divisions in Ukrainian society. One chooses to fight, making Molotov cocktails. Another flees. Another freezes.
Young Ukrainian refugees and students of the Amsterdam Youth Theatre School collaborated for 2.5 months. The story unfolds during the first two weeks of the invasion, showing teenagers communicating via Telegram and video calls, growing up rapidly in a world of fear, betrayal, and death.
Live guitar and drums form an essential emotional component. Beyond performance, the project fostered intercultural dialogue and supported the rehabilitation and integration of war-traumatized Ukrainian youth.
