Sasha Denisova
Playwright
Sasha Denisova is a Ukrainian playwright, director, novelist, and screenwriter. Born in Kyiv, she graduated from the Philology Department of Kyiv Taras Shevchenko University and furthered her studies in theatre at the Moscow Art Theatre School and the Moscow Meyerhold Centre. She also trained in dramaturgy at the Royal Court Theatre in London.
Denisova has created over 25 productions, collaborating with renowned theatres such as Teatr.doc in Moscow, Schaubühne in Berlin, TR Warszawa, and Babel Theatre in Mexico. Her work often blends documentary theatre with elements of phantasmagoria and the grotesque, addressing themes of war, identity, and resistance.
Notable works include Six Ribs of Rage, The Hague, My Mama and the Full-Scale Invasion, and Gollum. My Mama and the Full-Scale Invasion, inspired by her communications with her mother during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, has been staged internationally, including at the Woolly Mammoth Theatre in Washington, D.C., and the Wilma Theater in Philadelphia.
As an AR-UNESCO Resident, Denisova continues to create impactful theatre that resonates globally.
